As summer winds down and school buses return to Ohio roads, there’s one traffic rule every driver needs to remember:

When a school bus stops with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, drivers must stop—whether they are approaching from behind or coming from the opposite direction.

It’s a simple rule, but one that many drivers are unsure about. And when children are getting on or off a bus, knowing the law isn’t just about avoiding a ticket—it’s about protecting our community’s most precious passengers.

Ohio School Bus Safety Rules Every Driver Should Know

In Ohio, drivers approaching a stopped school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm must come to a complete stop.

Drivers should:

• 🛑 Stop at least 10 feet away from the school bus.
• 🚸 Remain stopped until the bus begins moving again, the lights stop flashing, and the stop arm is withdrawn.
• 👀 Watch carefully for children who may be crossing the road.
• 📵 Avoid distractions and keep their full attention on the roadway.

One important exception: If you are traveling on the opposite side of a divided highway with a physical barrier or separation, you may not be required to stop. However, if there is any doubt, slowing down and stopping is always the safest choice.
